Bringing back the P5 Sunstrip.....

I've explained all this really badly..... Sorry! I will clear it up (or probably make it worse)

The sunstrip comes in two parts. The 'sunstrip' part is just a strip of black vinyl You put it on the screen as far down as you wish (140mm being the legal maximum height) then you trim around the windscreen to remove the excess. Then you apply the second part, the text. You centre this on the sunstrip and apply it like one of the CHIPRUN!!! stickers.

There's a good video of the process -

Now the paper prototypes.... The text part is made by putting a sheet of white sticky back vinyl into a plotter cutter. This is a clever little machine that 'prints' images you send it from your cad package. By drawing the lines on the sheet using a very sharp blade. The blade has to be set so that the pressure cuts through the vinyl but doesn't cut the paper backing. Then you 'weed' the image. Meaning you peel off the vinyl that isn't part of the decal.

Another video!

What I did today is I used our plotter cutter at work. The technician smashed the blade so I can't cut any vinyl. But I did find the pen attachment today. So I unscrewed the blade carrier and replaced it with a pen. Fed in a roll of plain paper and hit print. This meant the plotter drew the design that it would otherwise cut.

I trimmed the paper to a rough size with a sharp knife so that I should see roughly what the text would look like against the car. Get a sense of perspective and scale if you see what I mean?

So, please don't draw any conclusions about the height/width of the suns trip part in the prototyping pics above because it isn't fitted :) I was just trying to get a feel for the font size.

As for installing the strip inside the screen. I can ask Mike to cut the text part in mirror image. Then it can be fitted inside the car windscreen and then you can put the black strip over the top of it on the inside of the screen. You are on our own with fitting it though. I'm far too old for trying to contort into a position anywhere near getting that onto the inside of the screen :p

Hopefully that all makes sense? Apologies for confusing you all!

I have a contact or 2 in the sign industry, I can ask them if they can get hold of some tinted vinyl, what sizes and colours were you thinking?

Just a flying comment having not read the thread...

I own both a vinyl and lasor cutter if you having problems, my GF can also get hold of pretty much any sort of vinyl going.

Also I don't know if anyone has mentioned but if your window wiper touch any part of this its an MOT fail. But you can just fit smaller wiper blades :thumb:

I failed on my sunstrip and got told to remove it...I promised I would...

Epic sunstrip news....!

I was in the plotter cutter room at work yesterday as the technician there had blown up his PC and I had to go put it back together. Whilst chatting
he revealed that the Roland GX-24 plotter cutter has been repaired!!! But... because it was so expensive to get working again the bosses are being
a bit tetchy about who uses it. So I can do the occasional small decal and get away with it but huge sunstrips are not really on the cards.

Luckily I had a really good excuse to be in the plotter cutter room yesterday as I rebuilt his PC. So I handed him the sunstip file and said "While
I sort your exploded machine, do me a favour?" and he snuck one sunstrip out of the machine for me.

The best time to fit a sunstrip is probably after work, in the dark, right?

The plan is that Mike will be helping us out with the sunstrips. He has a plotter cutter and has very kindly volunteered to be our manufacturer.

The old sun strips came in at £10 per sunstrip. Vinyl prices have gone up since then but we're going to stick with that price for now. If it turns
out that £10 a strip doesn't cover the materials and time we might have to put them up a bit but we will try not to. We will see how we get on.

Who wants a sunstrip then?
