MALLORY PARK

So as you may recall last weekend I had my first win at a very wet Curborough. So would I be able to repeat it at Mallory, the short answer to this is no. In fact this time I got thoroughly thrashed, not wet enough, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. It does seem as though I maybe running out of excuses, but I purchased the Hamilton guide of “how to blame something else” in hard back, which has another 47 viable excuses so should last me the rest of the season. I have had several track days at Mallory so I expected to do well, knowing bend course is bound the help no end. So what did they do, totally cockup the day for me by sending us around the most wiggly version of Mallory they had. We started from the pit lane, two thirds around Gerrards through a chicane, down the back straight and into another which smoothed out the Esses and then to the Hairpin, which I didn’t get right all day and then through the Bustop, with the finish just after Devils Elbow. So the only bit I had been round previously was Devils Elbow. Circuit looks like this:

http://www.trackdays.co.uk/tracks/mallory_park.htm

First practise run:
Took it steady as usual on the fist run, and found the first chicane quite tight as it goes onto the outfield and it cuts back across the circuit onto the infield.
Time 82.62sec

Second practise run:
Tony Thomas’s first run was 78.32sec and he was the closest time to me in the first run, so might stand a chance of getting closer on the next run. The Mugglestone’s were here in their hyabussa throttle bodied and tweeked very quick 1.8, producing times 4 seconds quicker than Tony and 8 seconds quicker than me, at the moment.

Second run finished in 78.16 which gets me ahead of Tony’s first run time, he’s not having that and he finished in 73.14

First official timed run:
I know I am not braking late enough approaching the Hair Pin so I know I can make up some time here and can take the start of Gerrards quicker as it is drying after the rain earlier in the morning.
Best time of the day
Finished in 76.96sec

Second official timed run:
Still cant get that Hair Pin right, the corner itself it o/k, but still not braking late enough. The problem is you are approaching it flat out in third, so doing about 70 – 80mph I don’t know for sure as I keep my eyes shut as it’s a bit scarey. I haven’t found a marker on the circuit to pick a later braking point from, and as it is up hill as well I could leave it about another four car lengths, but didn’t and finished in a time of 77.66sec

Best Times:
Allan Mugglestone 68.62
Nick Mugglestone 70.74
Tony Thomas 72.42
Me 76.96
