I was googling around trying to find some info and some inspiration on antenna mounts. When I came across a link to this unlisted video of some guys 'Maiden Flight'.

It made me feel quite good about mine.

Poor bugger! :( I suspect he had his CW and CCW props out of place.

As you may have noticed in the maiden flight video my Taranis transmitter is quite a hackable beastie. It speaks to you to save having to look at the screen in flight. Giving battery level warnings and flight mode change info among othe things.

So I of course hacked mine to play 'Danger Zone - by Kenny Loggins'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siwpn14IE7E

Because...... why wouldn't you...?

But the speaker in the Taranis is a little..... well..... little

Image

But, because we live in the future, I can solve that with the power of the internets!

Image

An upgraded speaker and a 3d printed adapter... from 'Straya!

&

Image

A 21mm speaker grille (from Essex)

Total cost of parts.... £10

:thumb:

Here's the 'Before' shot

Image

Pretty easy to install. Pull the old speaker out. Few drops of hot melt to glue in the adapter and the speaker.

Image

Then the scary part.... Drilling a 21mm hole in the plastic case. Thank goodness for Christmas Tree drill bits!

A few more spots of hot melt glue

Image

Upgrade complete :thumb:

Image

and now my terrible terrible music sounds so much better!

That is pretty sweet.
I noticed the other day that Nissan are giving away Parrot Drones with New Xtrails - kinda makes it an expensive way to get a drone though

So whats been going on in the world of the drone...!? Another month, another pay cheque, another allocation of pocket money :thumb:

The drone can fly autonomous missions controlled from a laptop. Replacing the usb cable with a 433mhz radio link.

Image

But a laptop is very bulky and the screen is not portable enough to have in front of you as you fly. The solution is the addition of an android tablet which connects to the usb radio module using an android OTG (on the go) cable. A two inch cable that costs twleve quid from Maplin! :banghead:

Image

I delved into the drawer of dead phones and came up a winner with Sam's old Galaxy Note 4. Then I ordered a tablet mount for the controller.

Image

Image

Carbon fibre and everything! Well swish!

Image

But it was incredibly fiddly to attach and made the transmitter too bulky to fit back in it's case. It was designated a failure.

The intertubes turned up a solution. A 3d printed mount. Except it wasn't quite right for my application. An hour with the source file and some adjustments were made.

The prototype

Image

Final design tweaks

Image

Final print

Image

Much better :)

Image

:thumb:

While I had the 3d printer out I could solve another little problem. The flight controller safety switch was now covered by the new "art of the joy of sex, canopy".

Image

Which meant having to muck about arming the vehicle. I didn't like that once you had 'armed' it, theoretically putting it into it's most dangerous state, one then had to fiddle and faff the canopy back on.

So I did some designing.....

Image

You can see the evolution of the part in that pic. First print success this time.

Image

Image

It clips onto the top and bottom plates and then two zip ties hold it in place

Image

Which places it neatly below the canopy on the rear of the vehicle

Image

The other canopy issue was that the GPS mount now needed to be moved. So I got some accessory mounts that are placed on the arms.

Image

Which the folding GPS mount is then attached to

Image

While I was on my spending spree..... I bought a neat little aluminium bracket that locks the battery connector solidly to the lower plate.

Image

Making battery changes much easier.

Speaking of which......

10000mah, 4s, lipo battery

Image

Which weighs the same as the rest of the vehicle without battery!!

Just need to log more flying time now. It's still a very intimidating thing to fly!

If you can handle the extra weight and size then a "kill-switch" from a bike, or race-car might be more satisfying than a little push switch.

It's a nice idea. But complicated by this switch being momentary and having an led in it that flashes different codes depending on the moods of the flight controller.

Well the Raspberry pi doodah didn't doobly doo.. but I know why. So more on that next flight!

Haven't sprung for the gimbal mount yet but I have had a flight with a GoPro on a static mount.

I totally forgot to retract the landing gear and the camera was on the wonk. But not a bad proof of concept

I did promise more on the Raspberry Pi buuuuuuut the last flight was at twilight so I don;t have any footage.

Basically.... It's a Raspberry Pi with a Pi camera (webcam) attached. It connects to a wifi hotspot that I carry with the drone kit. Giving me a first person view live feed from the drone. Quite cool, but the webcam doesn't handle low light.

I still haven't purchased the gopro gimbal :(

But I have had a play with some lights to help me figure out which way the drone is pointing during flight.

Image

A bit of code on an Arduino. Gives me some nice interactive staus lighting.

Jiji helped me with the code of course......

First LED lit test flight...
