For Sale Section to go Public

Postby Vic » Fri May 17, 2013 11:25 am

Please may we have the For Sale section made public.

It would help many of us with parts standard or not to get them sold on.
In the main it would help forum members sell the Whole Car to a much wider audience.
Which would encourage other non members to join up.

Often, P5 members sell stuff on to other P5ers at a lesser rate out of a sense of community, offering the goods to any member before placing them on the open market to ensure first dibs. Perhaps there should be a public for sale area to move unsold items across from the members only area?

Its a difficult one, but it does tend to be the most used bit on most forums, and more use equals a busier forum. It depends on peoples approach though, they do need "policing" which is more time spent by our mods.
I'd like it to go public but as with other forums, have a minimum post amount before you can have a for sale ad... something like 50 posts?

Jeez that's a big ass can of worms right there.....

We (the admin team) will kick it around a bit and see what we can come up with. Won't be an overnight decision but we will be looking at it. :thumb:

Not sure how the admin side works, but if more help is needed I'm sure some volunteers could be found... as long as there were some rules / guidelines in place?

My 1/2p worth...

Make it public. If sellers want to offer a discount to P5ers, then they have 2 choices - haggle with the buyer in private or advertise it in a members-only forum.

Better it comes here first, than appearing in some "for sale section" in a local paper that we are not likely to spot.
This is an MX5 enthusiast’s forum so anything that comes our way has got to be a benefit, hasn't it?
Not having a dig but remarks like these seem to appear on other MX5 forums, it must be me, I'm I missing something?
Perhaps an MX5 cars for sale section where members of the 'public' can post their MX5s and only MX5s without having to join the club might work.

I tend to view the forum by pushing the "View unread posts" button.
That means the repeated bumping of overpriced tat (and solid hardwood kitchens!) by one post wonders is a tad annoying.
If you want to sell your item to a wide audience without any comments (negative or otherwise), then get your hand in your pocket and post it on Autotrader/Pistonheads/ebay etc.

My 2p - leave it as it is. The Mods are unpaid and under appreciated enough as it is.
Having the additional arse pain of approving joe public ads would be unwelcome.

You wouldn't have to make the whole section open access, but at the moment the For Sale section is not even visible unless you are a signed up member, and that is restricting the market we are able to reach when we try to sell things.

At the moment, anyone can sign up to the forum and post a for sale ad and bump it 20 times a day and we can't do anything. If the for sale section was viewable but you couldn't post in there until you had a certain number of posts, we would have more people viewing the section, and potentially less hassle from idiots trying to sell kitchens or whatever.

I'd leave it. We all know where to buy cars from! And as we've nearly all got a 5 we probably won't be in the market for another......unless you're called Russell or Simon! ;0)

By making it "Read Only" to non members (if that is poss). Those wishing to sell to others and not just the converted
can reach a wider audience and encourage new membership.

Guys, Phoenix Fives is quite a small community where we all generally know each other and can call each other names if we want to without it becoming Nutz. It is not a selling site. There is a well known internet auction house for that. People can use Google if they are desperate enough and go to page 3 and I am sure it will pick out the thread anyway, you don't need to be a member to see the threads and if you are desperate to sell, post your phone number in the post. Just allowing people to post stuff for sale will have a negative impact on this community, not least because currently we can trust what is for sale is kosher because we know where you live.
I for one do not want to have to deal with 20 kitchen, posts, the well know blue pills, stuff from Russia and the bank of Nigeria every day, so basically no.

have to agree, going public can only be a bad thing, with the risk of being inundated with random adverts, and as has been said, if a wider audience is needed to sell items, then there's always the bay of e, gumtree etc

I know what you're saying and agree with most of it but this is not correct. Just logout of the site and the For Sale section disappears.
I'm not after any new people being able to add items for sale but think it might be good if more people could see the items we are selling.

Obviously you guys know what would be required to get it done & if its worth it though!!

Two For Sale Sections, Members and Non Members? Or a Button or Something to go Public or not? Time frame, say two weeks, then it goes Public. What do I know (not a lot).
Just thought it would be a good way of introducing non owner/members of becoming one.
The best way to buy a vehicle is off a well known, well run helpful forum and not from a general vehicle site. Less chance
of it being a total rust bucket or the part not doing what it is advertised to do.
The back up you get from membership of this and other enthusiast sites is second to none as well.

Making the sub forum visible without a membership is do'able.

Cool, cheers... obviously we are well aware (well I am anyway) that I have no clue what work would be needed to do these things, or what work would needed to run them, what other effects it would have etc, so we'll leave it to you guys :thumb:

ooohh heres the can of worms...

I think that "IF" we were going to do this... we would have a sub forum with some strict rules about what details you put in it to keep us all safe. Last thing i want is a moany email about how someone is now getting malicious phone calls and emails. also it would be CARS ONLY... no parts etc :thumb:

Good point, hadn't thought through the mechanics of how it would work... so you'd have to put a contact number or email address in the ad so non members could contact you .. which could lead to other issues. That, or we use it as a mechanism to get more members, but then it also draws attention to the fact we are here and makes us a target for other scams or whatever.... Hmmmm

The mere fact we exist means that we get Spam and are open to some form of abuse, some of it not warranted (Troll).

Cars only could be a good idea.
Rules should be in place.
It would be at the discretion of the seller to provide a contact phone number (group number) or email,
there are plenty of email accounts out there and you don't have to provide your normal one's.
