Anything you'd like to see different?

Healthy stuff...

Postby Vindi (Russell) » Mon Sep 15, 2014 11:32 am

Just wondering if there would be enough call for a section for "healthy stuff" ... cycling, climbing, outdoors, fitness / diet ... not sure what else but I think we have quite a few cyclists and a few climbers ...

Can we call it "0.5bhp"?

Sadly an average human can only maintain about 0.1 bhp ... top athletes about 0.3bhp, although they could put out about 2.5bhp briefly.

They can do it on a packet of HobNobs though!

A quick calculation says that a single HobNob (regular, not chocolate) could sustain a human body at 0.1bhp for about 1 hour (assuming fully efficient energy conversion).

However the promise of a HobNob could sustain a human body at 0.5bhp indefinitely

Apparently Cavendish can pump out 1600W (2.14 bhp) for a 200m sprint, and Sir Wiggo can sustain 500W (0.67bhp) up an Alpine mountain.

Thanks for setting it up, I don't have the necessary permissions to view it yet apparently ... although I can see the title is spelt wrong

I'm thinking a cycling thread or two ... one for members rides and another for favourite routes ... possibly further split into road and off road. Maybe a thread for triathlons ... apparently some people on here are young / fit enough to do them ...

Then a climbing / mountaineering one possibly, could have a general fitness one ... could be an interesting resource though, help to extend the social side. My old kit car club used to have a variety of social events, and one of them was a canoe trip down the River Severn ... could maybe have suggestions for social stuff that everyone could get involved in (they had a choice of boats from single kayaks to open canadians that 4 or 5 people could go in, so you don't have to paddle!)

I was going to do a thread for myself as well, almost a bit of a blog but from a fitness perspective. Might not be that interesting to a lot of people, but I think if I knew it was being recorded and other people might follow it, I would be a bit more motivated to keep it going!

You should have exactly the same permissions as the General "tab" so basically that is everyone.

It just comes up with this:

You do not have the required permissions to read topics within this forum.

No options to start a new thread or anything.

Every fitness forum needs a Strava section.

What's Strava? I'm assuming its one of the fitness/ route trackers that gives you a score for your route time? Off to Google ... probably ought to use something like that.
Just downloaded the app, might even go for a bike ride later!

Still can't get access to the Healthy Stuff section, same message coming up. Will try again from a different device when I get home.

The only reason I prefer Strava over Map My Run is the Segments.
It's like racing everyone else that's ridden on that same stretch of road.

And then quite a few pros are using it as well.
Some of the Tour riders use it - it's quite interesting to compare you own times against theirs.

Cool I shall be interested in this as I have become a bit of a gym junkie, I just got back from a training session with one of the trainers at my gym.
It was my first time on an outdoor track.
And I'm always looking for advice about training.
