The 2015 MotorPunk Sprint Series

Postby Cerberus » Mon Dec 08, 2014 12:15 pm

What is it?
The 2015 MotorPunk sprint series is the ideal way to enjoy some low cost, low risk high jinks in motorsport in your own car. A sprint is 3 laps against the clock at a dedicated circuit. This isn’t potentially expensive wheel to wheel stuff but is equally thrilling, you’re racing against the clock, on your own. You’ll need a helmet (not expensive, see EBay if you don’t have one) but there is no need for any special equipment, race licences or expensive tyres. We think this is an excellent way to enjoy the kind of modern and classic sportscars MotorPunk loves and so for 2015 we’re sponsoring a sprint series which is open to all.

There are different categories to cover different cars. Come along and set your benchmark time and come back as often as you like to try and beat your benchmark time by the biggest margin you can. The person with the biggest time improvement over the 2015 series will win a voucher for a weekend with one of Caterham’s fantastic road cars and the winner of our ‘hero of the series’ award will win a weekend with a new Morgan 3 Wheeler.

Where and When?
Events will be held at Throckmorten in Gloucestershire and also at Curborough in Staffordshire. These will be on a monthly basis throughout the year and we may add additional days if there is sufficient demand. You don’t need to attend every event to win, remember, but these things are addictive! The calendar will be published on the MotorPunk site and updated regularly.

Cheers for spotting this ... tempting partly because it's low cost and also because it's really local.

Not having to buy expensive fireproof clothing is a big plus too. I already own 3 helmets, so I don't really want to buy another one.

It is a nice idea and I wish it well, however you might want to ask some more questions before handing over hard earned as my man maths can't see how they can deliver what they are offering.
The prizes are probably gifts from Morgan and Caterham, Mission Motorsport have links, but just do somesums to see if it stacks up.
Curborough used to cost £600 for a private test day with no more than 10 cars allowed. If you wanted a proper day, more car, it was more money.
I would hope, as this is a proper event with proper prizes they have a paramedic, insurance etc. At very least I would see they need to clear £1,200 per day to pay for all this. £60 entry and 30 x 2 minute runs doesn't add up. If it were that easy I am sure the HSA would offer more than the 2 timed runs you get on MSA sprints. And all these timed runs are being recorded by one guy with a stop watch, he is going to have to concentrate very hard, I hope he has no distractions! We had 3 doing the timing on our sprints and that was hard enough with self starting electronic timing.
Man Maths also tells me you will need to enter a minimum of 2 events + the final to stand a chance, however the biggest factor is that you need to pray for a wet track on the day you set your bench mark time or you are not going to be in the running.

It's being run by these guys - http://www.sprintandtrackday.co.uk/

They've been running days at Curborough for while it seems. The usual days are £60 per car, 20 car maximum.

I guess Curborough are doing them a good price on the sprint series days because it's on Thursdays?

i have heard from a reliable source that it costs £300/day nowadays - maybe they bend the sprint organisers over a little, but for private bookings, especially on a thursday, it will be a lot less than £600.

You're right, It does sound a little shonky though.

As the name of the game is improvement, sandbagging will be a massive factor, how the hell are they going to tell if someone isn't trying???

Karts aren't allowed at the curburgring now, boo!!!

Most of the independent test days I have seen at Curburgring are mid week, and as posted are usually 600 pounds.
If there is a way of getting it cheaper I'd be very interested. :)
Any idea who we contact?

Nick, could it be a possible venue for a small MOT Sprint series? Cheaper than Blyton surely?

I wonder if we could book it for a day for a Phoenix Fives day out? If it is £300 for the day that's only £50 per head for a minimum of six drivers?

Curborough - I've organised a few days there for the kit car club ... a few years back but I'm pretty certain £300 is for a half day, during the week, which is 3 hours. Last day I organised there, you had to have first aid cover which was an extra £500 for the day, so it was £1100 for the day not including any insurance or staff / petrol / incidental costs ...

It's a good track for a test for half a day between half a dozen mates (£50 each, as many runs as you can fit in in 3 hours which is a lot), when there is a lot of people there it got frustrating.
