Any Model Train buffs on here?

Postby Vindi (Russell) » Sun Jun 23, 2013 11:18 pm

Bit of a long shot, but my kids have always been into trains, and I've been offered a big box of OO gauge train bits... so I'm going to make a bit of a layout for them in the garage. Has anyone got any experience with useful advice on setting it up / how to plan it etc?

I've already had a look around for a 1/76 model of an MX5 but haven't found one yet... I'm thinking I can make a layout with a lot of scenery and have a hillclimb or rally going on in the background somewhere!

I'll take that as a no then! Never mind, I'll witter on to myself here and track the progress as and when there is some.

Managed to win a Hornby Harry Potter train quite cheaply on Ebay last night, so that can be the bit that keeps the kids interested... also bought a couple of interesting cars for my rally side show... so that can be the bit that keeps me interested!! I'll aim for 1950s / 60s as an era, so I've got a couple of old Mercs and a Jag XK120 (the Appleyards rally car for those interested) on the way as well.

This weekend the kids and I will be making tunnels and scenery out of papier mache... could get messy!!

I used to have an OO set in my bedroom as a kid. Dad built it so that it was hinged on my bedroom wall so I could store it away when I wasn't using it (my room was tiny)

I didn't have much to start with, but ended up with a double-oval layout with sidings. A tunnel is a must (not so long that if the trains derail they're stuck there forever though)

I always wanted one of these

This looks like a wise investment too

Like the look of that... and yes, a tunnel or 2 will be added... although I'll probably have a big viaduct between 2 separate areas of track / scenery I think. Getting some very grand ideas, but will have to scale it down I expect!
